물의 경도에는 두가지 타입이 있다: general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH).
▣ GENERAL HARDNESS
General hardness 는 주로 물속의 칼슘(Ca++)과 마그네슘(Mg++)이온을 측정한다. 다른 이온은 GH에 영향을 미치나 통상 덜 중요하고 측정하기 어렵다. 경한 물이 GH와 KH의 상호작용으로 일반적으로 알칼리성임에도 불구하고 GH는 직접적으로 pH에 영향을 끼치지는 않는다.
GH는 통상 CaCO3, dH, 또는 CaCO3 몰농도의 ppm으로 표시된다. 1dH(German degree hardness)는 CaO 10mg/liter이다. 미국경도는 CaCO3의 ppm으로 측정된다 1dH는 17.8ppm CaCO3이다.
